What is Black Mountain near Vynogradov and how high is it?
This is a low mountain (565 m) on the right bank of the Tisza, between Vynogradovo and the village of Mala Kopanya. On its slopes is a botanical reserve that has been part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve since 1974.
Why is Black Mountain interesting if it is so low?
About 400 species of higher plants are used here on 823 hectares. On the northern slopes - beech and oak forests, and on the southern, well-warmed, steppe, rocky and even Mediterranean groups. Like on one mountain - quite motley.
How to get to Black Mountain?
The landmark is the city of Vynogradov, at the foot of which lies the massif. From there to the slopes - a few kilometers in the direction of the village of Mala Kopanya along the Tisza.
When is the best time to come?
The massif has a strict protected status (IUCN category Ia), so you can't walk freely here - the routes are coordinated with the reserve. The most grateful time is the end of spring, when the southern slopes are covered with steppe grasses.
Why is the mountain called Black?
The name is attached to the forested slopes, darkened from a distance by a dense beech forest. No volcano or gloomy legends - just a dark canopy of trees above the bright Tisza valley.
