What are Gorgans?
Mountain massif in the outer belt of the Ukrainian Carpathians, stretching almost 80 km from the northwest to the southeast with a width of about 40 km. It lies mainly in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, partly goes into Transcarpathia.
What is the highest peak here?
Velika Sivulya - 1836 m. Nearby are Mala Sivulya (1818 m) and Igrovets (1804 m), so there is enough space to stretch your legs in the forest.
Where does this name come from and what can we expect under our feet?
The name comes from stone outcrops, which the locals call gorgans or gregots. This is the hallmark of the massif: steep asymmetric slopes, sharp ridges and stones that easily lose your pace and make you tired.
What grows here?
Bottom are beech and fir forests, higher are fir trees, even higher are solid hemlock (mountain pine) and bare rocky peaks from about 1,600 m. The higher, the less shade and more wind.
Is it possible to walk freely everywhere?
No. In the nature reserve "Gorgany" access is limited: they are allowed there with official permission and usually accompanied by employees, mainly for scientific purposes. It is better to plan the route outside the protected area.
