FAQFrequently asked questions

What are the Red Caves and why are they interesting?

This is the longest cave in Crimea - more than 26 km of passageways have been explored. It was formed in limestones of the Jurassic period, consists of three caves (Kharanykh-Koba, Iel-Koba, Romashka) with six floors. The second name is Kyzil-Koba.

How to get there?

The caves lie on the slopes of Dovhorukivska Yayla, about 3 km from the village of Perevalne in the Simferopol district. The landmark is simple: first to Perevalny, then up the beam to the entrance.

What can be seen inside?

The equipped tourist route stretches for about 500 m with electric lighting. The underground river Kyzylkobinka flows through the cave and falls outside through the Su-Uchkan waterfall. Here is one of the largest stalactites in Europe - about 8 meters long and about 8 thousand years old, so don't rush to suppress it.

When is the best time to come and is a tour necessary?

The cave is open all year round, and the temperature underground is stable, so the weather above is almost irrelevant. The tourist part is led with a guide, but further into the system (difficulty category 4B) - only for trained speleologists.

Is there anything historical here?

So, traces of the Kyzyl-Kobin culture of the VII-VI centuries BC were found in the caves - the remains of settlements and artifacts. The first written mention of the cave dates back to 1803, and serious research began in 1879.
