Springs on Mount Urbash

Springs on Mount Urbash

In October 2008, while exploring Eastern Crimea, or more precisely the surroundings of Krasnokamenka (aka Kiziltash), our team discovered several springs on Mount Urbash. Finding a spring in Crimea is always a holiday. And meeting a spring not marked on the map is a real event. At least I was very happy.Map of springs on Mount Urbash

On the southern side, a wide dirt road goes around Mount Urbash. In fact, this is a section of the Feodosia-Sudak gas pipeline. The road is beautiful (I’m talking about the surrounding views) and comfortable (gentle elevation changes). Why not demand more? Where can I stay overnight?

On the map above you can see a spring (red) on the southeastern slope of Mount Urbash. I drew it, because unfortunately it is not indicated in the atlas of the Soyuzkarta SPC.

And the spring is notable - although it is not very full, it works all year round.

And finding this source is not difficult. It is right next to the road (gas pipeline), on its northern side. Right above the spring, the foresters organized a resting place (tourist camp). Huge tables for feasts, benches, a stove-fireplace and a sign “Take care of nature.” What else does a real Indian need??? By the way, the Indian is portrayed in the photographs by Andrey Gipich.

All the Indian needs is a place for a tent. And this is difficult here - it’s scary to spend the night on the road, and the roadside is too uneven. Apparently, they sleep here on the tables (with their noses in the salad).

Lost road to Chatal-Kaya.

We continue to look at the map. Do you see the green arrow pointing to the fork on the southwestern slope of Urbash? So, this fork is not so easy to find - the road to Chatal-Kaya is 2 meters higher than the main gas pipeline road. I assume that previously the roads were at the same level, and only the construction of a gas pipeline separated them. As a result, the upper road is overgrown and almost indistinguishable in the bushes (first photo, above the green arrow). I tried to mark the former fork with a vertical row of stones and a pole. But most likely this sign did not survive the winter.

Looking back (second photo) we see a gas pipeline road leading to the previously described tourist site (red arrow).

Western group of springs

If you do find the road to Chatal-Kaya, then traversing Mount Urbash from the west you will find several more springs that look like drinking bowls. One of them is indicated on the map (by the blue arrow). I can’t write the exact coordinates now (my GPS unexpectedly went on vacation). But I will say that it is quite cozy here: a dense forest, no cars driving, wild boars running around. Great place to live.
