Cerro Fitz Roy
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Mount Fitzroy and how high is it?
This is a mountain in Patagonia on the border of Argentina and Chile with a height of 3405 meters. The name is in honor of Robert Fitzroy, the captain of the ship "Beagle", and the local Tehuel name Chalten means "smoky mountain" - because of the eternal cap of clouds on the top.
How to get to Fitzroy?
The starting point is the village of El Chalten in Argentina. From there, it's about 20 kilometers round trip to the main lookout point, Laguna de los Tres.
When is the best time to go?
The Southern Hemisphere lives the other way around, so summer here is December-February, the most comfortable season for trekking. There are also winter ascents, but this is not for those who just want a good photo.
What to see around?
Classic views are available from Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Sucia, and for those with a tent, there's Campsite Poinceno for multi-day outings.
Why is Fitzroy so famous?
First, its silhouette is the same Patagonia brand logo, inspired by Yvon Chouinard's 1968 ascent. Secondly, the peak is considered one of the most technically difficult: it was conquered for the first time only in 1952 by Frenchmen Lionel Terre and Guido Magnon.
