Cesare Maestri claimed the ascent back in 1959 with Tony Egger, but there is no evidence left and most climbers do not believe it. The undoubted first ascent was made by a group of Italians in 1974.

Cerro Torre is part of a group of four peaks: Torre Egger, Punta Erron and Cerro Standhardt are nearby. And the mountain was lit up in Werner Herzog's film Scream of Stone in 1991.
