What to take on a hike in Patagonia
Below is a list of things that I, as an “expedition” leader, will be taking on my South America trip, the most important part of which will be a trek through Patagonia.
You should not mindlessly copy this list. Not every participant needs 4 walkie-talkies, a group tent, and a set of pots and burners.
For half of the trip, we will be completely culturally moving between cities with a comfortable climate, and most of the things on this list will be hanging around idle in our backpack. However, as soon as we fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas, the weather becomes completely unkind and we want to pack properly.
During both treks in Patagonia (Torres del Paine and Fitzroy), you can leave your excess items for storage at the El Calafate hostel. Provide a large and durable bag for this purpose.
