Shkhara

Mountain 📍 Caucasus

FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Shkhara and what is its height?

This is a mountain 5193 meters high on the Main Caucasus Range. In addition, it is the highest point of Georgia and the third highest peak in Europe - so the scale is serious.

Where exactly is it located?

In Svaneti, on the Georgian-Russian border. At the foot is the village of Ushguli, which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Is it difficult to get up there?

This is a full-fledged five-thousander with glaciers, so it does not smell like a walk here. Even the simplest route along the northeastern ridge is for trained climbers, not for those who have just bought boots.

When is the best time to go?

Climbing season is summer, roughly from June to September. The rest of the year the mountain leaves you alone with snow and glaciers.

What is interesting about her, besides height?

The British-Swiss team was the first to reach the top in 1888. The mountain itself is composed of crystalline slates, and its northern slope is fed by the large Bezengi Glacier.
