Where is this Death Valley and what makes it special?
This is a depression between the mountains on the border of California and Nevada. Here is the lowest point in North America - 86 meters below sea level.
Why is it called one of the hottest places on Earth?
In 1913, 56.7 °C was recorded here - a record for the Western Hemisphere. And July 2023 became the hottest month in the entire history of observations with an average daily temperature of 42.5 °C.
When is the best time to go here?
In the summer, July temperatures reach around 46 °C, so if you're not a salamander, plan for the winter. From November to February here it is from 5 to 20 °C, quite humanly.
What is worth seeing here?
The territory has the status of a national park. The main wonder is the "moving stones" at the bottom of Racetrack Play, which themselves leave traces on the ground.
Does anyone even live here?
Yes. The Timbisha people have inhabited the valley for at least a thousand years, and several families still live here.
