Skógafoss
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Skógafoss and where is it?
This is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland on the Skouga River, in the south of the country near the village of Skougar. The water falls from a height of 60 meters, and the width of the stream is about 25 meters. Once this ledge was a sea coast.
How to get there?
The waterfall is located about 5 kilometers from the village of Skougar in the south of Iceland - that is, right next to the main ring road, it is difficult to drive past it and not notice it.
When is the best time to come?
Take a sunny day: splashes from falling water give a rainbow, sometimes even a double one. In cloudy weather, the sight is more modest, but you will have to get wet all the same.
What can be done here, besides the photo below?
To the right of the waterfall there are 527 steps leading up to the observation deck. From there, the trail starts across the Fimmverdyugauls pass between two glaciers and on to the famous Leigavegur route. Prepare your feet.
Any interesting stories?
According to legend, the first Viking settler hid a treasure chest behind the waterfall; the ring, supposedly from that chest, is now kept in Skougar's museum. And Thor, Vikings, the final season of Game of Thrones and The Incredible Life of Walter Mitty were filmed here.
