Landmannalaugar
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Landmannalaugar?
This is a place in the highlands of Iceland, in the nature reserve Fjallabak, known for geothermal hot springs and variegated multi-colored mountains. It stands on the edge of a lava field that was formed around 1477.
Can you swim there?
Yes, that's the whole trick - there are natural hot springs in the middle of the highlands, where you can swim. Warm water after the cold wind of the highlands is the best reward for the journey.
What routes go from here?
Landmannalaugar is the northern start of the famous Laugavegur trail. Shorter options include a climb to Blaunyuk (about an hour) or a walk to the Lötipollur crater lake (around four hours there and back).
When is the best time to go?
The season is summer: that's when hiking, riding on Icelandic horses and fishing for arctic char are available. In winter, they only get here on cross-country skis. From 2024, parking at the springs must be reserved in advance, because the number of people willing has increased.
