What kind of waterfall is this and how big is it?
Hüdlfoss is a waterfall on the Kvitau River in southwestern Iceland. The water falls in two cascades: first 11 meters, then another 21 meters, and disappears in a narrow gorge about 32 meters deep. The width of the stream is about 70 meters.
How to get there?
Hüdlfoss is one of three stops on the Golden Circle tourist route, so it's easy to combine with Heikadalur Geysers and Thingvedlir National Park in one day from Reykjavik.
When is the best time to come?
In summer, the waterfall is at its fullest - about 140 cubic meters per second against 80 in winter. So if you want to see it in full force, plan for a warm season.
Who saved the waterfall from the power plant?
Sigridur Tomasdottir, daughter of the landowner, fought against plans to build a hydroelectric plant here. The story of her feat is a bit overgrown with legends, but the memorial in her honor above the waterfall is quite real.
What should be taken into account on the spot?
The water here thunders and sprays in all directions, so a little rain from splashes is guaranteed even on a sunny day. A raincoat or at least a willingness to get a little wet won't hurt.
