Ai Petri Summit

Ai-Petri

Height - 1.233 m above sea level. The mountain is visible within a radius of 35 kilometers.

The peak of Ai-Petri is a fossil reef. Reef limestone consists of fossilized colonial corals and algae that lived on the bottom of shallow areas of the Late Jurassic sea.

At that time, there was a sandbank inhabited by corals - marine organisms attached to the bottom with a calcareous skeleton, connected to each other by rigid bridges. Corals grew into large, bizarre colonies, died off, and new ones appeared in their place.

It is known that corals need light and a lot of oxygen, so they live at shallow depths (several tens of meters). This means that with a constant position of the seabed, coral structures cannot be powerful. But the reef limestones of Ai-Petri go 600 m deep. Consequently, the bottom of the Late Jurassic sea slowly sank, and the growing generations of corals all the time found themselves in favorable conditions.
