FAQFrequently asked questions

What is the Georgian Military Road?

This is a historical route through the Main Caucasus Range that connects Vladikavkaz with Tbilisi. The total length is about 208-212 km, and a permanent connection was opened here back in 1799 - so the road is older than most of the cars that drive it.

How high will you have to climb?

The highest point of the route is the Cross Pass at an altitude of 2379 meters. This is the most convenient passage in the central part of the ridge, so it will put your ears to rest moderately, without mountaineering feats.

What is worth seeing on the way?

The Ananuri fortress of the 16th-17th centuries, the ancient capital of Georgia Mtskheta, the Herget Trinity Church against the background of Mount Kazbek (5033 m) and the Monument of Russian-Georgian Friendship of 1983. Along the way, you will also come across the Yermolovsky stone - a granite boulder that was brought here in 1832.

When is it better to go, and when is it better not to take risks?

In winter, the road is dangerous due to avalanches and is often closed, so the cold season is not a good idea. The warm season is much more reliable; a nine-kilometer tunnel is planned for year-round traffic.

Why does she have such a belligerent name?

The route historically had a military significance, and in ancient times it was known as the Darya Pass. The modern name was fixed after the reconstruction under the leadership of Pavel Tsitsianov in 1803, and crews traveled here since 1814.
