Kazbek is an extinct stratovolcano about 5054 meters high. The last time it erupted was almost three thousand years ago, so now it behaves quite decently.
Where is Kazbek?
The mountain sits right on the border of Georgia and Russia (North Ossetia). This is the easternmost peak of the Caucasus, crossing the five thousand meter mark.
Where did the name come from?
At the beginning of the 19th century, the mountain was named after the local prince Gavriil Kazbek. The neighboring village was also later renamed - to Kazbegi.
Is it difficult to get there and where to spend the night?
Three Britons were the first to climb to the top back in 1868, so the route has long been trodden, but it is still a serious highland. At an altitude of 3,600 meters, the former weather station now serves as a shelter for climbers.
