What is Terpy Koba and where is it?
This is a vertical-type karst mine on the Karabi-yaila massif in the Crimea, at an altitude of about 975 m above sea level. That is, you will have to descend not down the mountain, but into the mountain itself.
How deep and big is it?
The depth is 135 m, the total length of the passages is 240 m. It all starts with a 40-meter mine, which turns into a hall with blocks, outcrops and clay.
How was it formed?
The mine is laid in layered Upper Jurassic limestones near a large fault. The entrance is hidden in a karst funnel under the peak of Karatau.
Is it easy to get there?
No. Difficulty category 2A, that is, without equipment and vertical descent skills, there is nothing to do there. This is an object for trained speleologists, not for a walk in sneakers.
Who found it and when?
The mine was opened by speleologists from Sevastopol in 1963, and in 1970, during the republican speleocamp, they groped for its continuation.
