FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Besh-Tecne and where is it?

This is a tract-basin with two ponds on Ai-Petrynskaya Yail in the Crimea, north of Mount At-Bash. The Crimean Tatar name literally means "five troughs for watering".

Why is there water here, if all around is limestone?

There is a layer of clay at the bottom of the pit, so it prevents water from simply falling through the limestone rocks. Hence, ponds are a rarity for dry Yayla.

How to get here?

The tract lies near the Eski-Bogaz trail, and it is separated from the Southern coast of Crimea by only about 8 km of road. That is, it is not about a multi-day expedition.

What is interesting, apart from the views?

The basin is surrounded by sharp ridged rocks and sparse forests, and it stretches over 700 meters. Bonus for the curious: some of the sedimentary rocks here have been squeezed to a height of more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

What makes this place historically interesting?

In the Stone Age, there was one of the largest parking lots of ancient people here. On the clay slopes, archaeologists found many fragments of tools from the Magdalene era and the Neolithic.
