Khi
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is the monastery of Khi (Ki) and where is it located?
It is a Tibetan-Buddhist monastery-gompa of the Gelug school in Spiti Valley, Lahool and Spiti District, Himachal Pradesh in northern India. It stands on top of a hill at an altitude of 4,166 meters - so it's a little harder to breathe here than at home.
How old is it and who founded it?
The monastery was founded in the middle of the 11th century by the Buddhist teacher Dromtonpa. In 2000, the millennium was even celebrated here - with a new prayer hall opened by the 14th Dalai Lama.
How to get there?
The nearest big city is Manali, about 210 kilometers away by mountain road. It's not the kind of trip you plan for half a day, so pack some time and warm clothes.
What is worth seeing here?
The monastery looks more like a defensive fortress than a quiet temple. Inside there are old frescoes and tanka of the 14th century with a noticeable Chinese influence, and the Danjur room with its rich painting stands out.
Are there any interesting facts?
The monastery did well: it was looted during the wars with Ladakh in the 1830s, then it was damaged by the Dogra and Sikh armies, then there was a fire, and in 1975 there was also an earthquake. Despite all this, about 300 llamas still live here.
