FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Coman and where to find it?

This is a reservoir on the Drin River in northern Albania, on the outskirts of Kukes and Shkoder. Despite the word lake, the reservoir is actually artificial - the water is held by a dam 115 meters high.

Where did this lake come from?

It was made by people: the dam near the village of Koman was built from 1979 to 1988. So the river turned into a long, narrow body of water up to 34 kilometers long.

What are tourists most proud of here?

By ferry. Every day he walks from Coman to Fierza for about 2.5 hours, squeezing through narrow canyons that like to be compared to Scandinavian fjords. In some places, the gorge narrows to some 50 meters between vertical walls.

What is interesting to see besides rocks?

The lake is fed by three rivers - Drin, Shala and Valbona, and the slopes are covered with dense forests. Among the animals, there are golden jackals, foxes, otters, and over the water, kingfishers and herons.

How to get here and why?

The ferry here is not just an attraction, but a means of transport: it connects the city of Bairam-Tsurri with the Tropoya region, and the remote villages on the shores can only be reached by boat. So the crossing is both expensive and an excursion.
