Butrint
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Butrint and why is it interesting?
These are the ruins of an ancient city in the south of Albania, which managed to be Greek, Roman, and Byzantine. Since 1992 - on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
How to get there?
Butrint lies approximately 14 km south of the city of Saranda, where the road has been leading since 1959. It is convenient to get to Saranda itself from the Greek island of Corfu - by ferry in one and a half hours or by faster hydrofoil in thirty minutes.
What is worth seeing on the spot?
The ancient theater with a lot of inscriptions, the temple of Asclepius, the Roman forum and aqueduct, the Byzantine basilica with mosaics, and also the fortress walls of the Acropolis, the Venetian triangular fortress and the castle of Ali Pasha. As for one point, the set is quite decent.
Are there nuances with visiting?
Yes: due to climate change, the low-lying part of the attraction is sometimes under water, so don't be surprised if some of the ruins decide to play Venice.
Any surprising facts?
The calendar of Butrint (then - Butrota) is mentioned in the mechanism from Antikythera, that ancient Greek analog computer. And this city survived the Slavic invasions, which wiped many of its neighbors off the map.
