Sognefjord
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Sognefjord and where is it?
This is the largest fjord in Norway and the third longest in the world - it stretches inland for as much as 205 km. It is located in the west of the country, in the Sogn-og-Fyurane region.
How deep is it?
The maximum depth reaches 1308 meters, and the rocks on both sides rise vertically for more than a kilometer in places. Looking up and down is equally dizzying.
How convenient to get there and what to see?
The main points are the villages of Flom, Gudvangen and Balestrand. The Flom railway runs from there, which rises 864 meters in 20 km and is considered the steepest self-propelled railway in the world.
What is the most valuable for the eye?
The side arm of Nereyfjörður is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the old wooden stave churches have been preserved in the vicinity. The narrow walls and the water between them are the main show.
Any weird stories?
Yes. In 1972, a Norwegian submarine hunted for two weeks in a fjord for what it thought was a Soviet submarine - a story recently confirmed by declassified documents.
