FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Vettisfossen and what makes it special?

This is a waterfall in Norway, in the Jotunheimen mountains. The water falls in one jump for 275 meters - it is the highest free-falling waterfall in Europe, moreover, without any dams or turbines that would rotate its flow.

Where is it located and how to get there?

Водоспад ховається в долині Утладален, у муніципалітеті Ордал (фюльке Вестланн). On foot from the village of Evre-Ordal, it takes about two to three hours of leisurely walking past the Vetti farm, from which the waterfall got its name. First an easy path, then some stones underfoot.

How big is it really?

The height is 275 meters in one fall, the width is about 23 meters. The flow is more modest in size: from 1 to 4 cubic meters per second. In the world rating of height, this is the 284th place, but in terms of free fall in Europe - the first.

Can I get close?

You will have to watch from the other side of the Fosselvi River. It is possible to wade it only during the period of the lowest water, so don't be heroic - admire it from a safe shore.

Why did the waterfall survive intact?

It lies within the Utladalen landscape conservation area, so it has not been dammed for hydropower. That is why it still falls freely, as nature intended.
