What is the Everglades and where is it?
This is a huge subtropical wetland in southern Florida, USA - stretching from Lake Okeechobee all the way to Florida Bay. Locals nicknamed it the 'grass river' for the slow flowing water that seeps through thickets of sword grass.
Is it the same national park?
Part of the swamps is protected as the Everglades National Park, established in 1947, with an area of more than 6,000 km². It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 and is considered the largest conservation area in the US subtropics.
Who can you meet here?
American alligators and sharp-nosed crocodiles live here at the same time - a rare neighborhood. Plus manatees, herons, cormorants and lots of other birds. Wild nature in full.
When is the best time to go?
Aim for fall and winter. In the summer, it's hot, humid and clouds of mosquitoes that quickly spoil the walk - the dry season is much more pleasant.
