Teotihuacan
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Teotihuacan and where to look for it?
These are the ruins of a huge pre-Columbian city 40 km from Mexico City, at an altitude of about 2,000 m. In its heyday in the 1st century, more than 100,000 people lived here - one of the largest cities in the world at that time.
What is worth getting out of here?
The Pyramid of the Sun is 65 meters high - it is the third highest pyramid on the planet, and they are allowed to go up. Nearby is the smaller Pyramid of the Moon (45 m), and between them stretches the Road of the Dead, 45 m wide and about 4 km long.
Are these tombs, like in Egypt?
No. The local pyramids were temples with stairs to the outside, not tombs of pharaohs. So climb up with a clear conscience - you won't disturb anyone.
Who built the city and where did it go?
The builders are not known for sure, and the city itself fell into decline around 650 after fires and some kind of catastrophe, the nature of which has not yet been solved.
Is this an officially valuable place?
Totally: since 1987, Teotihuacan has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the cultural category.
