Tara River Canyon
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Tara Canyon and what makes it special?
This is the deepest canyon in continental Europe, cut by the Tara River in the mountains of Montenegro. At its deepest point, its walls reach about 1,300 meters - only the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Sulak Canyon in the Caucasus are deeper than it.
How long is the canyon?
About 82 kilometers, of which about 60 pass through the territory of the Durmitor National Park. The Tara River itself is longer - more than 150 kilometers.
Is it worth going here for rafting?
Yes, this is the main local entertainment. On Tara there are almost 70 rapids and dozens of cascades of difficulty from the second to the fourth category; a one-day route is usually 14 kilometers from Brštanovica to Szczepan Pol. The European Rafting Championship was held here twice.
When is the best time to come?
The largest water is in the spring, when the snow melts, so rafting is the most exciting, but also the coldest. In the summer, the level is calmer and warmer, which is more convenient for beginners and those who want no extreme.
What else to see nearby?
The canyon is part of the Durmitor Park, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1977. Nearby - the famous Djurdzhevych bridge over the Tara, more than 80 caves, rock terraces and sandy beaches along the river.
