What is Durmitor and why is it interesting?
This is a mountain massif in the north-west of Montenegro, part of the Dinaric Alps, and a national park of the same name since 1952. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1980.
What is the highest peak here?
The highest point is Bobotov Kuk, 2523 meters. In total, the massif has as many as 48 peaks that exceed the 2,000-meter mark, so there will be no shortage of heights.
What is worth seeing in the park?
There are 18 glacial lakes here, which the locals nicknamed the mountain eyes; the most famous is the Black Lake. And the canyon of the Tara River, 80 km long and 1,300 meters deep, is the deepest gorge in Europe.
How to get there and where to stay?
The tourist heart of the park is the town of Zabljak in northern Montenegro. It is convenient to go on routes from there, because most of the hotels and services are concentrated there.
When is the best time to go?
In summer, it is a place for hiking, climbing and water sports, and in winter, Zabljak turns into a ski resort. So choose the season for what you are going for.
