What are these mountains and where are they?
This is a huge mountain system of North America, stretching for about 4,800 kilometers - from British Columbia in Canada to the state of New Mexico. On the way, they touch eight US states and two Canadian provinces, so one weekend is not enough.
What is the highest point?
In the American part, the record is held by Mount Elbert in Colorado - 4400 meters. In the Canadian sector, Robson is the highest, almost 3954 meters.
When is the best time to go?
Summer from June to September - for hikers and tents, warm and dry. From December to March, the ski season reigns here, with abundant snow.
What to see?
Significant national parks are concentrated here: Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton in the USA, Banff and Jasper in Canada. Alpine meadows, transparent lakes and local inhabitants - deer, mountain goats and bears.
Where did these mountains come from?
They began to form at the end of the Cretaceous period and experienced two waves of uplift. The last significant uplift occurred some 2-3 million years ago - almost yesterday by geological standards.
