Insurance for a hike along the Lycian Way
Hiking the Lycian Way is a relatively simple and safe activity. However, medical insurance is required for trips abroad. And not because they won’t let you go anywhere without it (they’ll let you in everywhere), but because in In case of an emergency, the cost of treatment may exceed reasonable limits. How much thousand dollars do you usually take with you on a hike “just in case”? If less than $5000, then you can’t do without insurance. More details this the question is discussed in the article "Why Do you need travel insurance?
Which insurance to choose
Okay, you need insurance, but what kind of insurance? Here are our thoughts on this account:
- it is better if the insurance company is large, international and specializing specifically in tourism (and not in car insurance)
- When applying for a policy, you must indicate the type of vacation - “Mountain tourism" (extreme, active recreation or the like). This makes the policy more expensive but it guarantees that the insurance company will not refuse you a policy when it finds out what did you do on vacation
- you should think about whether you need program B or is program A enough? This also affects the price, and in the case of hiking in Turkey, both options seem acceptable to me. There are many roads on the Lycian Way and almost everywhere You can get there by car (rather than calling a helicopter to evacuate you). Therefore, we can assume that even insurance under program A will cover transportation from the nearest village (but not from the top of the mountain) to the nearest hospital
- Turkey is a relatively inexpensive country and therefore you can limit yourself to coverage of $30,000. This amount should be enough to treat the most common hiking injuries and illnesses.
Insurance cost
Below are indicative prices for insurance policies for trekking Turkey. The cost is tied to the dollar exchange rate and can vary significantly. Duration of stay in all options is 10 days.
- program A, coverage €30,000 - 350 UAH or 14.5 dollars
- program B, coverage €30,000 - 490 UAH or 20.2 dollars
- program A, coverage €50,000 - 535 UAH or 22 dollars
- program B, coverage €50,000 - 750 UAH or 31 USD
In our opinion, for easy hikes along the Lycian path the first option is optimally sufficient - program A and coverage of 30 thousand. But the choice, of course, is yours. Let me remind you that program A insurance only covers ground transportation - i.e. An ambulance leaving on a normal asphalt road does not imply that someone will look for you at the top of the mountain. In order to get help you will need to go down to the asphalt.
