FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Nevytskyi Castle and where is it located?
These are the ruins of a medieval fortress on a mountain above the Uzh River, near the village of Kamianytsia in Transcarpathia, approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Uzhhorod.
How old is this castle?
The first fortifications were built here in the 13th century. So the stones you scratch on are good for seven hundred years.
Who and when destroyed it?
The castle was captured twice: first by the Mongol-Tatars in 1241, and finally it was taken and destroyed by the Transylvanian voivode Djordj Rakotsi in 1644. Since then, the castle has not been completely rebuilt.
What can be seen there today?
Two ramparts with a moat, a defensive wall with four towers, an exit tower and a well with a diameter of about 3.5 meters have been preserved. In 2019-2021, restoration was carried out, in particular, the quadrangular tower-donjon was restored.
How to get there?
The landmark is Uzhhorod, from which the castle is about 12 kilometers in the direction of the village of Kamianitsa. The castle itself stands on a hill, so the final section will have to be climbed up on foot.
