Elbrus

Mountain 📍 Caucasus

FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Elbrus and what is its height?

This is the highest mountain in the Caucasus and, by most standards, in all of Europe. The western peak reaches 5642 m, the eastern one is a little more modest - 5621 m.

Is it really a volcano?

Yes, Elbrus is a stratovolcano. It last woke up about 900 years ago, so it is formally considered potentially active, although it does not plan to wake up during your ascension period.

How to get to the foot?

The easiest way is from the south through the Baksan Gorge to the Azau glade at 2350 m, from where the cable cars continue. From the north, through the Emmanuel glade, the road is longer and more difficult.

When is it better to go climbing?

Summer, especially July-August: the second half of the season is drier and more predictable. The weather here changes quickly, so even in summer it is not worth relaxing.

What should be known about the danger and what to see nearby?

Elbrus does not forgive frivolity - every year climbers die here due to sudden weather and glacial cracks, so a guide and preparation are mandatory. Nearby there is something to distract yourself: Cheget ski resort, Jili-Su hot springs and Azau lake.
