What is Kizil-Tash and why is it called that?

This is a rock above Gurzuf 48 meters high and about 120-130 meters across, it looks like a giant stone drum that has fallen on its side. The name is Crimean Tatar and is translated as "Red stone", although the stone itself is grayish-white with yellow-orange spots - there was a little confusion with the color here.

Where is it and how to get there?

The rock stands near the village of Krasnokamyanka above Gurzuf, near Yalta. Focus on Krasnokamyanka - it is the closest to it from there.

What does it consist of?

From dense dark gray limestone, similar to marble, with calcite crystals. The stone is broken by many cracks at an angle of 35-40 degrees, so its structure can be seen with the naked eye.

What is interesting there, apart from the rock itself?

The remains of a fortress from the 12th-13th centuries have been preserved on the ridge, birds nest and rare vegetation grows. And the area is also famous for wine - it is here that they make the "white muscat of the Red Stone", which collected gold medals.

Is this a protected area?

Yes, since 1969, Kyzil-Tash has had the status of a geological monument of nature with an area of ​​2 hectares and is included in the nature reserve fund. That is, behave like a guest, not like a host.
