FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Cerro Pine Grande and how high is it?

This is the highest mountain of the Torres del Paine National Park and the entire Cordillera Paine range - 2884 meters. The name is roughly translated from Spanish as Big Blue Mountain, which fully matches the landscape.

Where is it and how to get there?

The mountain stands in the Chilean region of Magallanes, in the Torres del Paine Park, some 95 km northwest of the town of Puerto Natales. Most travelers start from there.

When is the best time to go?

From December to February is the local summer with the most pleasant weather. However, do not relax: low temperatures and crazy winds happen here at any time of the year.

Is it easy to get on it?

No way. The first successful ascent was made by five Italians on December 27, 1957, and before that, in 1954, two climbers died in an avalanche. There are only six documented successful ascents, the last one in April 2024.

What is interesting to see nearby?

The southern slope of the mountain is covered by the Frances Glacier, and the peak itself rises 2,840 meters above Gray Lake in just five kilometers - a drop that makes you dizzy. The mountain is composed mainly of granite, which is about 12.5 million years old.
