Lago Dickson
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Dixon Lake and where is it?
This is a glacial lake in the north of Torres del Paine National Park in the Patagonian part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Sheet. It is fed by the Dixon Glacier, and the Pine River flows out of the lake.
Is this a lake in Chile or Argentina?
And there, and there. Until 1998, it was completely Chilean, but the glacier retreated, and now the border is just water - the Chilean side belongs to the Magallanes region, the Argentinean Santa Cruz province.
Where did such a lake come from?
It is younger than it seems: the current lake was formed around the 1980s, when the reservoirs from three glaciers - Dixon, Cubo (Cinquentenario) and Frias (Grande) - began to melt and merge.
How to get there?
The lake lies in the depths of the Torres del Paine Park, so you can walk along the national park routes - there is no quick detour by car to the water itself. In addition to the Dixon Glacier, water is also brought to the lake by the Los Perros River from the glacier of the same name.
