Kekova
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Kekova and why is she interesting?
This is a small island off the southern coast of Turkey, in the province of Antalya, near the Demre district. The main feature is the ruins of the ancient city of Dolihiste, which partially sank under the water after the earthquake, so part of the antiquity now floats under your boat.
What happened there and when?
The city was founded by the Lycians a thousand years before our era, and in the 2nd century an earthquake destroyed Dolichiste and sent a good part of it to the bottom of the sea. There have been no permanent residents on the island since 1850 - there are no people, history remains.
What can be seen around the island?
In addition to the flooded Dolihiste, there are three more ancient cities nearby - Aperlai, Simena and Teymussa, also with ancient ruins. All this together makes the water area of Kekova so popular among lovers of antiquities.
Is it possible to swim and dive there?
With caution. In 1990, the island and a large area of water around it was declared a closed zone, and diving was initially prohibited altogether. Later, visiting and diving were partially allowed, but only within the security zone - so you can't just jump off the board wherever you want.
