What is Hardangerfjord and how big is it?
This is the second longest fjord in Norway and the fifth in the world - about 180 km long, with a depth of up to 860 meters. That is, there is more water under you than the height of a decent mountain.
Where is it and how to get there?
The fjord lies in the Vestland county in western Norway, about 80 km south of Bergen. Bergen is the nearest major point of support, from there routes are laid deep into the fjord.
What is worth seeing here?
The Folgefonna Glacier is the third largest in Norway (220 sq. km), since 2005 it has been a national park. Plus waterfalls and orchards: the region is not called the orchard of Norway for nothing.
Why are there so many salmon?
Hardangerfjord is one of the four main fishing areas in the world: more than 40,000 tons of salmon and rainbow trout are grown here every year. So fish on the table is a local classic.
Since when do tourists come here?
Organized tourism began as early as 1875, when Thomas Cook launched weekly cruises from London. That is, the fjord receives travelers longer than most modern resorts exist.
