FAQFrequently asked questions
What kind of lake is it and at what height is it?
The Great Almaty lake is a mountain catchment in the Zailiyskyi Alatau ridge, at an altitude of about 2511 meters. It is almost 1.6 km long, and reaches 30-40 meters deep.
How to get from Almaty?
The lake is located approximately 15 km south of the center of Almaty. By car, the journey will take about an hour, and those who want to can reach it by bicycle or walk in half a day. A small fee must be paid to enter the national park.
Why does water change color and when to go?
Depending on the season, the water turns from light green to turquoise blue - all because of glacial feeding. The most water in the lake is in August, the least - in February.
Can you swim there?
No, swimming is prohibited: the lake supplies Almaty with drinking water. In addition, the water is kept at the level of 8-10 degrees, so there are usually not many people willing to dive anyway.
What to see nearby?
The lake is surrounded by three prominent peaks - Sovietov (4317 m), Ozerny (4110 m) and Turist (3954 m). Above the lake stands the domed Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory, open to visitors and even with tourist accommodation.
