FAQFrequently asked questions

What is a Whirlwind and how tall is it?

This is the highest peak of the Pirin mountain massif in Bulgaria - 2914 meters. In the whole country, only Musala is higher than it, and in the Balkans Vihren is even inferior to the Greek Olympus. That is, bronze, but honorable.

How to get to the top?

The nearest city is Bansko at the foot of Pirin. The classic route starts from the Vihren lodge at an altitude of about 1,950 m, from where it takes three to four hours in summer. The path is steep, but does not require technical mountaineering - a normal climb with elements of scramble.

When is the best time to go to Vihren?

In summer, when the route is most accessible. It is also possible to go down in winter, but this is a different story of difficulty - the first winter ascent was made as far back as January 1925.

What is interesting to see on the road and up there?

The top offers a view of almost the entire northern Pirin, and you can also see the Rila, Rhodopes and several neighboring ridges. Nearby lies Snezhnika - the southernmost ice mass in Europe, a kind of miniature glacier measuring approximately 80 by 90 meters in summer.

What makes Vihren special from the point of view of nature?

The top is made of marble with karst relief, so there are simply no streams and lakes at the peak - the water goes underground. Rare flora such as edelweiss and Pirin poppy can be found on the slopes, and large herds of sardines graze here.
