Seven Rila Lakes
FAQFrequently asked questions
What are the Seven Lakes and where are they?
This is a group of seven glacial lakes in the Rila Mountains in northwestern Bulgaria. They lie high: from 2095 m (Nizhnye ozero) to 2535 m (Sloza, the highest of all).
Why do lakes have such strange names?
Each received a name according to the shape. There is Oko (oval and the deepest, 37.5 m), Nyrka (with the steepest banks), Blyznyuk (the largest in terms of area), Trilysnyk, Rybne (the smallest, only 2.5 m) and the already mentioned Slyosa and Lower Lake.
How to get there?
The lakes are connected by streams with waterfalls and cascades, so you can go up on foot. Near Rybny Lake at an altitude of about 2,196 m there is a shelter hut where you can rest or spend the night.
When is the best time to go?
It is most comfortable in July-August, when the temperature exceeds 10 degrees. In October, the lakes freeze and the ice freezes up to two meters thick, so a winter hike is a completely different story.
What is interesting about this place?
This is the most popular group of lakes in Bulgaria. Water from all seven lakes converges in Nizhne, where the German River is born.
