FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Kirkjufell and how high is it?

This is a 463-meter-high mountain on the Snæfedlsnes peninsula in the north of Iceland, near the town of Grundarfjörður. Despite the volcanic rock inside, it is not a volcano itself, but a nunatak - a peak that once protruded above the glaciers.

Why is Kirkjufell so popular?

It is considered the most photographed mountain in Iceland - the characteristic cone-shaped shape is the reason. It also appeared in Game of Thrones (seasons 6-7) as the same "tip mountain" north of the Wall.

Can it be climbed?

Maybe, in summer or autumn, the ascent takes about three hours. But the steep sections become dangerous in the rain or in bad weather - there have been fatalities here, so you shouldn't be heroic unnecessarily.

When is the best time to go?

The warmer season is suitable for climbing - summer and autumn, when the slopes are drier. У мокру чи вітряну погоду краще милуватися знизу й фотографувати, а не дертися вгору.

What is this mountain made of?

From alternating Pleistocene lava and sandstone, and tuff on top. Such a layered "leaf" structure gave it a recognizable silhouette.
