FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Dettifoss and what makes it so special?

This is a waterfall in the northeast of Iceland, in Vatnajökull National Park, about 44 meters high and up to 100 meters wide. It is considered the second most powerful waterfall in Europe after the Rhine - about 193 cubic meters of water every second.

On which river is Dettifoss?

On the Jökulsa au Fjädlum river, which is fed by meltwater from the Vatnajökull glacier. Hence the color - the water is cloudy, gray-brown from glacial silt, not blue postcard.

How to get there?

Two sides lead to the waterfall. Western - road 862 with asphalt, passes all year round. Eastern - gravel 864, usually open only in summer. Dettifoss is part of the Diamond Circle tourist ring next to Husavik and Lake Myvatn.

When is the best time to go?

In the summer, if you want to go to the east coast, the gravel road may be closed for the rest of the year. The west side is accessible at all times, but in winter, still check the roads before leaving.

Does Dettifoss have his moment of fame?

Yes. It is he who opens the 2012 film Prometheus, where he plays the role of the original Earth. The waterfall also inspired the Icelandic composer Jóun Leifs to write a separate piece of music.
