A loving elephant destroys houses in Chitwan

🗓 2018-04-23

An angry wild elephant (male) entered a populated area and destroyed several residential buildings in Chitwan Wildlife Sanctuary, Nepal. There is reason to believe that this was the famous local Romeo.

The spokesperson for Chitwan National Park, Nurendra Arayal, said that on April 21 at around 11:00 p.m., an elephant destroyed 5 dwellings. After that, people chased the elephant and he disappeared.

The next day, local residents blocked traffic on the Bharatpur-Madi-Thori highway and demanded compensation for damage caused by the actions of the elephant.

The press attache suggested that the culprit of the destruction was a wild male named Dhrube. A couple of days before the events described, Dhrube helped the “service” elephant Tirthmankali, who was participating in patrolling Chitwan National Park in the area of the Sukhibhar checkpoint, to escape. At night, service elephants are tied with an iron chain. However, this did not stop the lovers.

Most likely the houses were destroyed after the elephants separated. Elephant training experts insist that both elephants should be left alone. They must not be chased or frightened. After a couple of days, the animals will calm down from the love fever and the elephant will return to the feeder at the checkpoint.

P.S. Currently, almost 100% of newborn elephant calves at the Chitwan Elephant Breeding center are children of wild males and domestic elephants.
