Dictionary of travel terms

Here is a list of the words most often used in sports and tourism terminology and their interpretation, as well as explanations of some slang words.

      alpendyai - (horn) slang. the word means climber.

      anorak - a windproof jacket (windbreaker) that does not have a zipper on the chest so as not to be blown out, as a result of which it is put on over the head. Another integral feature is the chest pocket, which additionally protects the chest from blowing. Anaraks can be waterproof, insulated, etc.

shoe covers - (ski) canvas stockings worn over shoes.

      barrel - (river) a water obstacle formed due to uneven ground, as a rule, occurs in rapids with a large spillway. It is a stone or slab that is doused with a strong stream, resulting in a picture of water falling or draining from a small height.

      bystrinka - (river) part of a river that contains a fast current, but does not have any water obstacles.

      val - (river) a water obstacle that looks like a standing wave. Shafts can be oblique, inclined, flat, etc.

      spinner - (river) exercise for training lifting with a screw, consists of its repeated use on one side, due to which the effect of rotation in the water is achieved. propeller/screw - a method of restoring the standing position of a boat, after it has capsized, by means of a long arcing stroke under water.

      germa - (river) abbr. hermetic bag.

      hydra - (river) abbr. wetsuit

      Gore-tex - breathable waterproof material.

      rowing - (river) slang. the word implies an oar.

      two/three, etc. - implies the number of the difficulty category of the river or rapid. The first is the easiest, the sixth is the most difficult.

      deck - (river) the upper non-removable part of the skin of the kayak, located above the water.

      day - a day on a hike, during which the group does not go anywhere, but stands still. Day trips are usually arranged once or twice on a hike.

      arc stroke - (river) stroke, which is done in an arc. As a rule, it is used when it is necessary to turn the boat sharply.

      live bait - (river) a person insuring people from the shore with the help of a spaskonets.

      biting - (river) a phenomenon in which the pressure of water begins to put pressure on the top of the boat, which often leads to a capsize.

      hook - (river) type of stroke that allows you to maintain a stable position during a sharp change in the direction of the flow.

      canoe - (river) a boat, the cockpit of which is equipped with devices for kneeling, driven by an oar with a single blade.

      kat/catamaran - (river) alloy vehicle having the design of two inflatable cylinders connected by a rectangular frame.

      catheter - adapter for inflating life jackets, balloons and other rafting equipment.

      kayak - (river) a single-seater boat propelled by an oar with two blades. It is also a single-seat kayak. a single-sport boat without a frame.

      keelson - (river) a part of a kayak that runs along the bottom and is the basis for fastening all other parts.

      cockpit - (river) the internal space of the boat in which the rower is located.

      boiler/toilet - (river) a system of barrels that forms a semi-ring, so that the water falls as if from the wall of the boiler. crocodile - (river) slang. a word used to describe a water obstacle in which the turbulence of the water flow inevitably presses on the outer surface of the boat, creating the sensation of "swallowing" the boat.

      lag - (river) position in which the boat is sideways to the stream.

      neoprene is a heat-insulating material that, when wet, retains water and heats it due to the temperature of the human body, which it fits tightly, resulting in a heat-insulating layer that allows you to be in ice water for up to 15-20 minutes. Neoprene is the name given to all types of clothing made using its technology.

      support - (river) movement with an oar, allowing you to lean on the water to avoid a capsize.

      point - (river) the upper, annular part of the cockpit, through which the rower climbs into the boat.

      ass/pendal/seat/foam butt/butt pad/foam/foam back/falseback - a small rectangle cut out of foam and attached to the back of the belt with an elastic band. Used as a seat when sitting on cold ground.

      foam - slang. polyurethane foam, a heat-insulating material, is used for sleeping mats and padding in backpack straps.

      reach - (river) part of a river or reservoir where there is either no current at all or it is not felt.

      toadstool - (river) a water obstacle, which is a powerful underwater source that hits the surface, as a result of which a mushroom-like protrusion is formed.

      podgrebitsy - (river) a homemade structure on rafts, on which the oar rests, like on a stand.

      clamp - (river) a place in a rapid where the main flow is noticeably pressed against one of the banks. Usually the clamps are located at the bends of the river with a strong current.

      channel - (river) a narrow river connecting two lakes.

      cannon - (river) a seat for a rower on a catamaran in the form of a tripod or inflatable.

      raft - (river) inflatable multi-person raft used for rafting on rapids rivers.

      lever/lever - (river) a method of restoring the standing position of a boat, after a capsize, by means of a stroke directed perpendicular to the hull of the boat in a vertical plane.

      candle - (river) position in which the boat is vertical in the water.

      drain - (river) a water obstacle, which is a gentle slope of water.

      spaskonets/carrot/grenade - (river) rope with a float and a carabiner at the end, used for belaying in the rapids.

      stav - (river) catamaran frame.

      stringer - (river) part of a kayak that runs parallel to the keelson.

      stage - (river) part of the threshold, distinguished from the remaining parts by the absence of a sharp difference in the height of the water fall.

      drag - (river) passive braking by fixing the oar in the water.

      Taganok - rigid metal structure for installing pots on a fire.

      traverse - (river) intersection of a jet or stream, against the direction of the flow. - (horn) movement across the slope, i.e. not to the top, but as if around it. seal/cliff start - a jump into the water together with the boat (the rower is in the boat) from any ledge or part of the land.

      ulov - (river) a place in a rapid where the current is directed against the main current of the stream, or is absent. Catches are usually located behind ridges of stones, on the inner sides of turns, behind large stones that are not flooded with water, etc.

      stops - (river) protrusions in the cockpit where the rower’s legs rest.

      bulwark - (river) a part of a kayak that secures the upper parts of the frames.

      apron - (river) a covering on the top of the kayak, used to prevent water from getting inside.

      mooring / mooring ⟦ / T2⟧ - (river) means mooring, mooring.

      rift/rift - (river) small non-categorical rapid, making it difficult to pass due to the presence of a large number of protruding stones.

      skin/galosh - (river) waterproof fabric covering for a kayak.

      frame - (river) part of a kayak, attached to the keelson perpendicularly and carrying all the stringers.

      forend - (river) the rod of the oar on which the blades are attached.

      skirt - (river) a waterproof part of the boat, which with one ring is put on the goggle or apron ring, and with the other tightly fits the rower’s body to prevent water from entering the boat.

      tongue - (river) the main direction of movement of the jet in the threshold.

(horn) - appears in mountain tourism.
