Alaki
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Alaki and where is it?
This is a gorge on the southern coast of Crimea, cut by a river, which is called differently in different places: Jurla at the top, Alaka in the middle course (it goes around Mount Alaka), and Sotera at the bottom. The river itself is short, only about 8 km, but manages to form a canyon with rock walls 10-25 meters high.
What is worth seeing here?
The main local celebrity is stone mushrooms 5-7 meters high, earthen pyramids, which the water patiently carved out of the slopes. Before that, there are waterfalls, among them Geyser and Jurla, so it will definitely not be boring.
How to get here?
The easiest landmark is the Alushta-Sudak route: stone mushrooms and the entrance to the Sotera valley lie right next to it. From there, the path leads up along the river to the waterfalls and the gorge itself.
Where did this strange name come from?
The lower part of the river is called Sotera from the Greek Soter - Savior. It was named so because of the medieval Christian church of Christ the Savior, which once stood near the mouth.
