Arabika
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Arabica and where is it anyway?
This is the highest limestone massif in the Gagra ridge of the Western Caucasus, in Abkhazia near the city of Gagra. The highest point reaches 2,661 meters - not Everest, but the view is free.
Why is Arabica famous among speleologists?
The two deepest caves on the planet - Verevkina and Krubera - are hidden here. That is, the world records are literally under your feet, only you should go down them with preparation, and not with a flashlight on your phone.
Where did this coffee name come from?
According to one of the versions, the name comes from the Abkhazian "arbaҕ ayk" - a rooster's crest, which the massif resembles in shape. It has nothing to do with coffee, unfortunately or fortunately.
Where are the boundaries of the array?
The massif is squeezed by the canyons of the Kutu-Shara, Gega and Bzyb rivers in the north and east, the Black Sea coast in the southwest and the Khashupse and Sandripsh valleys in the west. There is something to be guided by.
What kind of rock is this and why are there so many caves?
Arabica is composed of limestone - that is why it is all perforated by karst cavities. Water has been grinding the stone for thousands of years, resulting in one of the deepest cave systems in the world.
