Parahilmen

Mountain 📍 Crimea

FAQFrequently asked questions

What is Paragilmen and how tall is it?

This is a limestone mountain 857 meters high - a detached piece of the Main Range of the Crimean Mountains. From the sea, it descends to a healthy trapezoid with almost vertical sides.

Where is it and how to get there?

The mountain stands 2 km north of the village of Maly Mayak in the Alushta region. It is clearly visible from the Yalta-Simferopol highway, from where the pedestrian approach begins.

Why are the slopes so steep?

This is a monolithic limestone remnant: the sides reach a steepness of 60-80 degrees, but the top is unexpectedly flat and stretches for about half a kilometer.

What is interesting to see at the top?

The mountain is wooded, there are about 30 types of trees and bushes, a dozen of them are from the Red Book. Two yew trees grow on the top, one with a trunk diameter of about 70 cm and a crown of 7-8 meters - it seems to be one of the oldest trees in Crimea.

Is this a protected area and where does the name come from?

Yes, since 1964, Paragilmen has the status of a natural monument. The name, they say, is Greek - from a word with the meaning "to go beyond something".
