Durmitor
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Durmitor and what is the highest point here?
This is a mountain massif in the north-west of Montenegro, part of the Dinaric Highlands, a national park since 1952, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. The highest peak is Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), and it is only one of 48 peaks exceeding 2,000 meters.
How to get here and where to stay?
The main tourist hub is the town of Zabljak, where the majority of hotels and services are concentrated. From there it is convenient to start on the routes of the park.
When is the best time to go?
Depends on what you're here for. In winter, Durmitor turns into a ski and snowboard resort, and in summer it is an area for trekking, mountaineering and water sports.
What is worth seeing here?
There are 18 glacial lakes in the park, which the locals affectionately call "mountain eyes" (Gorske Oči); the most famous is the Black Lake. And the Tara River flows nearby with its canyon 80 km long and up to 1,300 m deep - the deepest in Europe.
Where did the name Durmitor come from?
No one knows for sure, and linguists are still arguing. Some derive it from Romanian with the meaning "a place to sleep", others lean towards Celtic roots. By the way, peaks similar in name can be found all over the former Yugoslavia.
