Smith Rock

This is a state park in central Oregon that rock climbers consider the birthplace of the modern American sport climber. There are more than 1,800 routes for every taste - from easy to those after which everything hurts.

The main crest reaches about 3,200 feet above sea level, and the sheer walls above Crooked River are about 600 feet. The river itself flows at about 2,600 feet, so the drop is noticeable.

The park lies in central Oregon near the towns of Redmond and Terrebonne, on the road through the High Desert. The day zone is open from dawn to dusk, all year round.

It is cool in winter, but quiet and without crowds. In the summer, the temperature easily jumps over a hundred degrees Fahrenheit, and there are much more people - so choose what is less annoying for you.

Monkey Face Rock - a tower about 350 feet high with the famous Just Do It route, Misery Ridge trail with views, and the banks of Crooked River with otters and beavers. Animals include deer, eagles, falcons, and even rattlesnakes, so watch your feet.
