What is Suluada and why is it called the Turkish Maldives?
This is a small uninhabited island in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Antalya with white sand and clear turquoise water - hence the nickname. The area is only about 1 square kilometer, the island is narrow and elongated.
How to get there?
Only by boat - there are no roads to the island. Boats usually leave from Adrasan beach, which is about 7-8 km from the island.
When is the best time to go?
Walking tours run from around April to November, so plan your visit for the warm season.
Is it possible to stay there overnight?
No. Suluada is a nature conservation area, overnight stays and pitching tents are prohibited. There is also a strong current near the southern caves, so swimming there is limited.
What is interesting about the island, apart from water?
In ancient times, it was called Krambusa, and during the Cold War, the US fleet anchored nearby - the nearby bay is still called American Bay. The monk seal, one of the rarest animals of the Mediterranean, lives in the caves, and the name of the island in Turkish means watery - because of the source of fresh water.
