What kind of mountain is it and how high is it?
Pip Ivan (also called Chornohorskyi) is one of the highest peaks of Montenegro, 2028.5 meters. It lies on the border of Ivano-Frankivsk region and Transcarpathia, in the Carpathian National Natural Park.
What is the mysterious "White Elephant" at the top?
These are the ruins of the Polish astronomical and meteorological observatory, which the locals nicknamed the "White Elephant". Since 2017, a rescue station has been operating there - so if something goes wrong, help is closer than it seems.
How to get there?
The most popular option is the green route from the village of Šibene, which is about 5 hours uphill. There are also paths from Zembroni, from which the path to the top is longer. There are no shortcuts here.
When is the best time to go to Pip Ivan?
From May to August, the slopes are covered with subalpine meadows and rhododendron flowers - the most beautiful time. Summer and early autumn are the safest time, because the weather in Montenegro likes to surprise.
How difficult is the climb?
Closer to the top, stone rubble-grinds begin, so look carefully under your feet. Technical mountaineering is not necessary, but endurance and normal footwear are mandatory.
