Giewont
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Gevont and how tall is it?
This is a mountain in the Western Tatras in southern Poland, right above Zakopane. The highest peak (Great Gevont) has 1894 meters; the massif stretches with three peaks - Small, Big and Long Gevont.
What kind of cross is visible on the top?
A 15-meter-high steel cross was erected on the Great Gevont back in 1901. Since then, it has become both a place of pilgrimage and a national symbol - so yes, you did not make up that dot against the background of the sky.
How to get there?
The starting point is the resort town of Zakopane; marked trails lead up, and the easiest approach is from the south side. The route is popular, so it is unlikely that you will be alone.
When is the best time to go to Gevont?
It is most comfortable in the summer when the trails are dry. But be aware: the mountain is famous for frequent thunderstorms, and a metal cross on the top during lightning is not the company you need.
What is interesting, besides the scenery?
The northern wall breaks off 600 meters just above Zakopane, Tatra chamois and rare alpine plants occur on the slopes. And the profile of the mountain resembles a reclining knight - according to legend, sleepy knights will wake up when danger threatens Poland.
